May Newsletter

WELCOME

Welcome to May’s Newsletter. Let’s start with last month’s trivia question, since only 1 person answered correctly. Monty Gautreau was the only person who knew that Steve Hunter was the first chef at the Merchantman Pub. Thanks to every other person who answered Guy LeClair. Congrats Monty!!!! I have picked 2 names from the “Guy LeClair pile” and they are: Lois Adams and David McInnis. Both will be receiving a Merchantman Pub t-shirt in the mail!!!!

May is a busy month – UPEI Graduation, Mother’s Day, Victoria Day – just to name a few. On Monday, May 2nd the Pub will be closed for a little Spring Cleaning – carpets need cleaning and the kitchen floor needs to be painted!!! And on May 24th, we’ll be closed for Victoria Day.

This month we will be featuring our Grand Champion Easter Beef!!! Friday nights will be Angus Burger night. The kitchen is also starting to brainstorm for the Summer Menu .

Chef Shirleen was talking to Dean at Rodney’s Oyster Depot and he tells us that there will be fresh PEI oysters early this month..... and as of today they are back and as delicious as ever!!!!

Pop by The Galley – they have new coffee cards. Each coffee you buy, you’re card gets stamped and after 10 you will get a coffee on us!!! Just ask Crystal or Samantha (our “new gal”) and they will get you organized!!!

Sunday, July 10th, will be the Pub’s Birthday Party – details to come soon – be sure to mark your calendar!!!

Mother's Day Girft Ideas

There is nothing wrong with the tried-and-true gifts of flowers and brunch for Mother’s Day..... but here are a few other ideas that Mom might like!

1) “Green Thumb Mom”

For the Mom who loves to garden, the Black and Decker PlantSmart is a perfect gift. It monitors soil conditions and moisture levels. You can even plug it into Mom’s computer and she’ll get all kinds of advice about which plants are the best for her garden!! For a Grenn Thumb Mom who happens to live in an apartment, try a herb garden kit. She can grow fresh herbs to use in her cooking!!

2) “Clean Freak Mom”

Usually it’s Mom who does all the household cleaning – well at least most of it. So why not hire a cleaning company like Merry Maids to come into Mom’s home and do it all for her?

3) “Betty Crocker Mom”

If your Mom is a baker or a whiz in the kitchen, she will love a KitchenAid Mixer. It has so many different attachments, it’s not just for mixing cookie dough anymore. And they come in so many bright, cool colors!!

4) “Techy Mom”

A mom who loves her gadgets is sure to love an Apple iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad. These can all help Mom stay in touch with family far away. They are pretty simple to use and Mom can use them for reading, surfing the net or listening to music.

Of course most Moms will say that they don’t need a gift – and sometimes, it’s true – Mom may have just about everything she needs or wants. But there are a lot of Moms, like mine, who would prefer, love and appreciate a gift that brings the family together – like a pot luck family supper – or having one of us kids tackle or finish a project around the house.

A sweet gesture is almost always the best gift.

Steerman's Quality Meats in Millview, PEI is owned and operated by Scott and Debbie Drake anf their family. They offer everything from beef to chicken to pork and lamb year round. The Pub purchases chicken, ribs, pork and lamb throughout the year. It is always delicious, fresh and full of flavour.

Bartender Spotlight

This month we are spotlighting one of our bartenders - Dave Connolly. Dave has been at the Pub for a hundred years..... or at least it seems like it's been that long!!! He is a fixture behind the bar on Thursday nights and can be found just about anywhere firing up some trivia. Dave Connolly has the biggest heart - he will always greet you with a smile and for some of us a big bear hug!!!

For the past 15 years, Dave Connolly has made us all laugh and have a great time - Thursday nights wouldn't be the same without him!!! To see more of Dave, during the summer months anyway, head over to Countryview Golf Course - you might find him strolling around with his furry friends looking for golf balls!!!

TRIVIA

Cinco de Mayo celebrates the unlikely victory of the Mexican Army over the French Army on May 5th, 1862. Peter was in Mexico this year enjoying their cuisine and the Pub serves a tasty chicken quesadilla.

In Oaxaca, Mexico this dish is sold as snacks at local sporting events – toasted grasshoppers with garlic, lime juice and salt. What is this dish called? (And would you eat it?!?!).

Print this off and drop it off at the pub or e-mail your answer before September 30th, 2010 to infoatmerchantmanpub [dot] com. The first 10 people to correctly answer the question will be in the draw to WIN!!!! The winner will receive a FREE dinner valued up to $17.95.

Please include your name, address, phone number and e-mail along with your answer.
